How to Choose the Correct Polyimide Tape
Confirm the Actual Process Temperature
Record both the normal operating temperature and the highest short-term temperature. Also determine how long the tape remains exposed to heat. A tape that survives a short thermal cycle may not be suitable for continuous high-temperature operation.
Identify the Surface Material
Adhesion can differ on stainless steel, aluminum, copper, PCB laminate, glass, coated metal and engineering plastic. Testing on the actual substrate is recommended.
Select the Appropriate Thickness
Thin tape is suitable for precise masking and applications with limited space. Thicker constructions may provide improved mechanical protection, but they can be less conformable around small components.
Check Residue Requirements
For PCB masking, powder coating and temporary protection, removal cleanliness is critical. Test the tape using the actual heating cycle before mass production.
Determine Electrical Requirements
