Is Mylar Tape Conductive?

Standard Mylar (PET) tape is NOT conductive — it is a high-performance electrical insulator. Only specially coated or laminated versions are conductive.

1. Pure / Standard Mylar Tape (Insulator)

• Base material: BoPET (polyester) film
• Electrical property: Excellent dielectric insulator
• Dielectric strength: up to 7,000 V/mil
• Typical colors: clear, red, green, white, blue
• Main uses: electrical insulation, transformer winding, high-temp masking

2. Conductive Mylar Tapes (Special Types)

Metallized Mylar (Aluminum Coated)

• Thin aluminum layer vacuum-deposited on PET
• Surface conductive; core remains insulating
• Applications: EMI/RFI shielding, static control, grounding
  

Aluminum Foil Mylar Tape

• Aluminum foil laminated to Mylar film
• Fully conductive across the foil surface
• Used for cable shielding and high-frequency interference protection
  

Copper Foil Mylar Tape

• Copper foil bonded to PET backing
• High conductivity, solderable
• Used for PCB grounding, sensitive electronics shielding
